The 2008 alumni dinner was a smashing success. There are pictures, and opportunities to share your own pictures from the event (just register with the website, log in and create your own album).

Students graduate under the catalog in force when they entered the program (the rules are actually a bit more complicated, e.g., if you transferred in...). If you forgot to buy the one covering YOUR requirements, you can now get access to the older version online. 

All computers on the SJSU wired network have access to them through CollegeSource.

Forbes magazine and PayScale.com have evaluated real-time salary information from 10 million users to determine which college majors are the most lucrative. 

The Computer Engineering major was ranked #1.

If you have one or more conditions on your admission, then you should enroll in CMPE 180, in the section corresponding to your condition requirement:

CMPE 180 Section 46 instead of CMPE 046

CMPE 180 Section 24 instead of CMPE 124

CMPE 180 Section 25 instead of CMPE 125

CMPE 180 Section 26 instead of CMPE 126

CMPE 180 Section 27 instead of CMPE 127

CMPE 180 Section 42 instead of CMPE 142


Note: You need to pass the challenge exam of CMPE 101 before taking CMPE 180 Section 26.

The department has received several inquiries already in regards to the new curriculum changes in fall. Hopefully this email will serve its purpose in clearing up any confusion or questions that you may have.

Every student must choose a catalog year and follow that catalog’s bulletin/major form of courses. A student may choose to follow the curriculum requirements based on the semester/year they started at a California community college, the semester/year they were admitted to SJSU, or the semester/year they are graduating from SJSU. The student must abide by all curriculum requirements of the semester/year that they choose.

Therefore, if you are a CMPE 46 student following a bulletin/major form that requires CMPE 46, then you may stay enrolled in this course for fall. 

However, the department encourages that students take CMPE 30 + CMPE 50 + MATH 123 instead of CMPE 46 + CMPE 101 + Math 129A + MATH 133A. There will be a substitution memo available in the department if you opt to take the new curriculum.

CMPE students who follow that route should now take ME 19 (a new course) instead of ME 20. Keep in mind, ME 20 is still acceptable, but is one unit more.

So, students that are enrolled in CMPE 46 for fall who 

- will NOT be following a bulletin prior to fall 2007 

or

- who wish to substitute courses as described above

need to drop and enroll into the new course CMPE 30 and then take the courses that follow - CMPE 50 + MATH 123 + ME 19. These 4 courses are the NEW CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS, unless you are following an OLD bulletin.

EE students continue to take CMPE 46. This change does NOT affect you.

The Computer Engineering Department will offer a combined BS and MS degree, and will open the combined degree for enrollment the Fall 2006 semester.

The accelerated program is for motivated, well-qualified students. The combined program allows BS Computer Engineering students to progress toward the Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or Software Engineering while still undergraduates. The scheduling flexibility provided by the program enables students to complete the BS and MS degrees efficiently, shaving off as much as two semester worth of time and units.

Eligibility
Students majoring in BS Computer Engineering are eligible to apply to the combined program if they meet the following minimum eligibility requirements:
o Junior status and completion of at least 12 upper division units of CMPE courses.
o Meet a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 in the major.
o Have not yet enrolled in senior project. 

Participation in the program is based on prior academic performance and other measures of professional promise. Students are selected by a faculty committee.

Program of Study

Students in the combined program complete all courses required for the MS degree and all courses required for the BS degree except the senior project.

Completion of the MS project or thesis satisfies the senior project requirement. The MS thesis/project must include a major design experience to complete the undergraduate degree. 

In consultation with the graduate coordinator, up to nine technical elective units may count towards the MS degree requirements.

Upon completion of the program, students are awarded the BS and MS degrees at the same graduation ceremony and at the same time. Degrees are earned concurrently, not serially.

Undergraduate studets who wish to enroll in a graduate computer engineering class as a technical elective may do so - but you have to make sure you have the necessary prerequisite knowledge.

 Please see your advisor and the instructor of the class you wish to attend to check whether it fits your program of study.

When we evaluate applications for admission to our graduate programs (MS CMPE, MS SE) we endeavor to identify the applicant's likelihood for success, and whether there are areas of prerequisite knowledge that the applicant may be missing.

If the applicant's transcripts and other documentation indicate a potential weakness then the admission becomes conditional, and one or more prerequisite classes are added to the degree requirements.

Conditions often include CMPE 126, and this class requires a challenge exam:

If you are going to enroll in CMPE 126, then you have to pass the CMPE 101 exam at the beginning of the semester.

Once you have passed the challenge exam then you can enroll in the course. If you fail the challenge exam then you have to enroll in the remedial course (CMPE 101).
